Get Discovered

So you're starting a band or your solo career and you just have on lingering question. How do I get discovered? There's no simple answer but we've done some research to pull together a good starting point.

Do Your Homework

There are no silver bullets here. Start by researching every commercial and non-commercial radio station within a certain radius of where you live. Start with 50 to 100 miles depending on the population density where you live. We suggest commercial and non-commercial because you may have a better chance getting your music played initially on a college radio station than a commercial radio station.

Create Your Media Kit

Start by creating a high quality CD of your music. Don't be intimidated by the reference to "media kit." A one sheet bio of you (or your band), a business card, your CD and a nice folder will do the trick. If you haven't already done so, get busy with your social networking presence on sites such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter. Put a few samples (just sample, not complete songs) of your music on the social networking sites. If someone gets interested, they'll contact you to hear more.

Start Contacting

Contact local radio stations by sending your media kit (with CD) along with a cover letter. Start small and local and work your way up. Once you get played, be sure to update your media kit with the radio stations and programs that are playing your music.

Stick With It

There are plenty of artists out there trying to do the same thing you are. So it's going to require determination, hard work and continuous follow up to achieve your goal. Stick with it.
